Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is not a new regulation. Medical examiners have always been encouraged to screen drivers for sleep apnea. There are no new regulations or laws regarding sleep apnea. However, awareness for sleep apnea has increased a lot over the last couple years. Drivers with high risks for sleep apnea will need to be screened for sleep apnea.
Often you will be able to get a temporary card while you have your sleep study performed. If the sleep study shows no sleep apnea you should be fine, but if it shows you have sleep apnea you will need to start treatment right away.
Risk factors for sleep apnea include diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, over the age of 42, snoring, elevated BMI, day time drowsiness, recessed jaw and large neck. If you have a lot of these risk factors you will probably need a sleep study. Sleep studies are often covered under insurance.
